Hemos llegado (We have arrived)

Flying over the cities at night they were lit up blue instead of yellow. When we got off the plane and were driving through the city it smelled like dirt and sewage and exhaust and really good Mexican food. We left the airport and drove past Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, KFC, Sears and Office Depot. On the way our driver complained about the enormous unmarked speed bumps that they have on every road no matter how small or large. Traffic going 45 on a main thoroughfare has to slow to 10 mph very quickly. When we got to the house we met our host mother Ruth. She’s very nice and speaks absolutely no English. She gave us a whirlwind tour of the house and many instructions…all in Spanish. The house is beautiful though you wouldn’t know it from the street. There’s just a solid wall that lines the street with the occasional large gate. The courtyard inside is beautiful, full of flowering plants. It’s all just so Mexican: brightly colored stucco walls, round archways, terra cotta roof tiles. We also met Ruth’s dog who chased us up a flight of stairs barking. Though he’s a Mexican dog, I understood perfectly what he had to say. There’s another American student from Philadelphia who has been staying here. She’ll be leaving next week though. She and some of her friends tried to get us to go out last night, but we couldn’t take any more excitement.
